The low user rating on the imdb isn't very reasonable. And his romantic involvement with Mary Murphy is totally unbelievable. Rod Cameron is laughably bad casted as the protagonist. In 'The Electronic Monster' they're just weird noises. The score consist mostly out of futuristic (electronic) noises, a bit like in "Forbidden Planet" - but in that movie it provided the alien atmosphere of the planet. Especially the camera work is rather poor. A Dutch(?) megalomaniac has been using the machine to brainwash a small group of patients (which apparently is a step further than just implanting pleasant dreams.) The "technical" execution isn't very good. Halfway through, the movie takes an unexpected twist towards a more banal story line. (These implanted dreams/thoughts usually involve partially nude ballet dancers - a bit naughty for the 1950s.) In order to achieve this result a novelty recording device is used to "apply" pleasant dreams to these people. This leads him to a psychiatric clinic that provides treatment for patients to overcome problems like anxiety disorders an drug addiction(!). An insurance agent investigates the death of an American movie star in France. The movie starts with a nice bit of mystery. One of the earliest sci-fi flicks I can think of, where a by humans made machine is used for brainwashing. Seen on May the 12th 2013 (Day 132: Sunday) This little review contains spoilers! Interesting movie.
